San Antonio

Scattered all throughout Lima is a chain of restaurant/cafes known as San Antonio. If you're ever in town, San Antonio is a "must-visit" location. Their coffee is great, their sandwhiches are spectacular, and their pastries are out of this world.

San Antonio also has a bakery-type component where you can come in and order bread, cheese, etc. (you just have to take a number from the red dispenser on the right).

As you can see, the ambiance of San Antonio is cool and inviting. Most of the franchise members have large windows and wide open spaces like in the above image.

The Media Luna sandwhich which is hard to describe except to say that it's a virtual explosion of flavors, delights and stretchy cheeses. We cut one in half and it was just about enough for two full-grown men. For a single person, this thing sets you up for about a 20 mile hike.

This is the Teriyaki chicken which was pretty awesome but also just a bit salty for my taste.

San Antonio's are all over Lima, but oddly I couldn't find their ad in the telephone book (weird). I suppose they just assume that everybody knows where they are. Well, becasue I'm so dedicated to the readers of "Streets of Lima," I went out on a 20 mile hike and traversed every street of Lima until I found (I think) every single San Antonio Cafe. Here are my results:

Av. Vasco Núñez de Balboa 770, Miraflores
Av. Prolongación Primavera 373, Chacarilla
Av. Angamos Oeste 1494, Miraflores.
Roca de Vergallo 201, Magdalena del Mar

If you want to check out some other cafes of Lima, start here:
Haiti
Mel's
Arabica

Here's a map to the easiest San Antonio to find (it's right on the corner, you see it from a mile away):

  1. I also vouch for the quality of the food at San Antonio. Really good sandwiches, coffee, chocolate caliente (in the winter), pastries, ice cream. It's also one place where any tourist can safely order a salad without fear of getting sick from unwashed produce. The salads at San Antonio are delicious and very safe.
